Fred Reid
On the 19th June 2008 Lough Neagh Rescue lost a member of it’s family. Fred Reid slipped away after a long illness, he is survived by his wife Irella, son John, and daughter Julie.
When I first met Fred it was at a training night in 1989, he cut a cool, calm, and collected figure, traits that where to be cemented in my mind over the following years as Fred imparted freely his vast knowledge of all things nautical to the budding Lifeboatmen who avidly listened to his remarks and encouragement at every debrief following the nights training.
Fred had skills that Lough Neagh Rescue quickly put to good use, he became Treasurer and Communications Officer, posts that he put his own unique stamp upon, devising methods of operation that we still use to this day, 20 years on.
Fred & Irella, as Mr & Mrs Reid where collectively known, became an institution almost immediately, together they began a tradition of camaraderie that still exists in the service today, every debrief was accompanied by Irella’s home made soup and buttered bap’s which somehow made any chastisement delivered by Fred regarding the nights proceedings more palatable, Fred’s easy going manner and charming personality made him a much sought after source of information about Lough Neagh, and many organisations would regularly approach him for guidance and advice which Fred gave without fear or favour to any who asked.
Fred was one of natures gentlemen, I do not know anyone who disliked him or could fault his knowledge about the Lough, Fred always gave more than he received, he would rather be kind than harsh, he left a lasting impression on anyone who knew him, and I firmly believe Fred was ready for his final voyage, his course was planned, and his berth at journey’s end was booked, and paid in full.

Safe Home and Bon Voyage, Fred Reid
